McCandless PA History

In 1796 James Duff purchased 400 acres of farmland in the region, but it wasn’t until 1849 that efforts were made to form a township. This occurred in 1851, and it was called Taylor.  In 1857 the township was incorporated and renamed McCandless. In 1927, 1600 acre North Park was established by Allegheny County. In 1930 the population was 2,653; in 2000 it was 29,000.  McCandless is located in the North Hills of Allegheny County, north of Pittsburgh. In 2007, Money Magazine designated it among the 100 most desirable places to live.

McCandless PA Recreation and Activities

There are a number of recreation sites and parks: Council Memorial Park, Potter Park and Memorial Park are passive recreation areas. Active recreation is available at Rogers Soccer Fields, the Vincentian Recreation Center, Vestal Park and Wall Memorial Park. Nearby is North Park Golf Course and North Park, as well as Wildwood Golf Course. Proximity to Pittsburgh makes sporting and cultural activities readily available.
