Cheswick, PA History and Location
Cheswick PA is a borough in Allegheny County with approximately three hundred and fifty acres. As of July 2007, the population was 1,754. Cheswick has some of the best farmland in Western Pennsylvania. Truck farms sold vegetables to Pittsburgh in the early days, and lumber was floated down the river on barges and rafts to the steel mills. Wealthy families built grand Victorian homes along the canal; however, when the railroad bought out the right of way, it became an undesirable place to live and many of the homes became rundown and neglected. One of the first industries was the Penwick Distillery, along with several smaller factories; however, coal, river sand, and gravel were the most important commodities.
